This SATB choral piece is inspired by the ancient figure of Marzanna, a Slavic Goddess associated with winter. Various traditions and rites are connected with her, the most common of which is the drowning or burning of an effigy to mark the end of winter and to summon spring's rebirth. Marzanna is the name she bears in Polish. She is known as Morana in Czech, Slovene, Bosnian and Croatian; Morena in Slovak and Macedonian; Mara in Ukrainian; Mora in Bulgarian; Marena in Russian; and Morė in Lithuanian.
